Mustard Wool + Wax Tote

A few months back I connected with Kjerste of Wax & Wool over Instagram. I love how the creative community supports and encourages each other and connecting with Kjerste has been so nice. When I first named the tote for Making Magazine I hadn’t heard of Kjerste’s business. I had named it after the materials I used for the original sample (wool coating and waxed canvas) so it was only a matter of time before someone mentioned it and I’ve been admirer of her and her business ever since. I of course was admiring her candles and she told me she hoped to find time or a friend to sew her a Wool + Wax Tote. I know as a small business owner, sometimes personal side projects get put on hold, so I jumped at the chance to make one for her. I’m so glad I did.

After the mad dash of sample making for Quilt Market, it was a refreshing choice to sit down and make this tote. Sometimes it’s all I need to restart and get my sewing groove back in order. I sent Kjerste a few fabric ideas and she loved the mustard/charcoal and herringbone combo. She had told me she’s mostly a neutral gal, which I definitely resonate with, but that mustard is a color she liked, so this combo was one I thought would work well.

This is actually the same waxed canvas I used for the Making Backpack, but with a darker lining it somehow makes it look more mustard-y which I love. The contrast bottom is Pewter Denim and the herringbone lining (by Robert Kaufman Fabrics) is such a great stable fabric for the lining. It didn’t need any interfacing which is always a bonus in my book.

I did add a d-ring to the back handle. I’ve seen the idea around a few places and figured it would be fun to add. It’ll be nice to be able to clip a key ring to it.

Fabrics: Marigold Waxed Canvas, Pewter Denim waxed canvas from AL Frances Textiles on Etsy, lining is Herringbone Denim by Robert Kaufman Fabrics
Pattern: Wool + Wax Tote (PDF here or available in my booklet, Everyday Essentials here or check your local quilt shop)

I love the marigold color but it seems your source no longer has that color! Any other ideas on where I could find it? Great looking tote.

Hi Jill, AL Frances Textiles is a small batch maker of waxed canvas. She sometimes is not able to restock certain colors. You could contact her shop and see if she has plans to make more or an equivalent. Hope that helps a bit.:)

I am trying to make this, but have ordered the wrong size rivets. Can you please tell me the size of these?

    1. Anna Graham says:

I use an 8mm head, with either a 6-9mm post depending on what type of fabric combo I use. 9mm would be a longer post for thicker fabrics.

      1. Meridith Ellis says:

Oh you’re wonderful! Thank you so much! These are my first rivets!
