Double Zip Wallets // Handmade Style

doublezipwallet

Here are two wallets I made using the Double Zip Wallet pattern from my book. I think this is such a fun and satisfying project. I love useful things and of course a wallet gets a lot of use! And what a perfect way to use my favorite fabrics. I think I could easily find myself making a bunch for friends for Christmas or just for fun actually. Sorry to sound all gushy. I guess lately I’ve been really grateful to have small projects to work on that are easy to finish. Summer is awesome, but stealing time away to sew doesn’t sound like so much fun when the pool and bicycles and ice cream shop are calling! Know what I mean?

I had picked out a few of my favorite Leah Duncan prints to use for these and I couldn’t be happier with the results. I love these fabrics so much!! I think they lend themselves so well to accessories (and everything else – who am I kidding?!). I love that there are two zippered compartments for coins and other important documents (including my iPhone 6), the interior pockets have places for cards and even a check book.

Hope you’re enjoying summer! School is just around the corner for my girls and we’re excited about things starting, I may have even convinced them to join swim team this fall, yayyyyy!

These are both so great! This project might be next on my list. : ) And, I totally get how satisfying the little projects can be.

  2. Beautiful fabric choices as always! I have had a leather one of these near finished all summer… Need to get on it! But yes, I agree – the ice cream (and gin and tonics) call…

  3. Susan says:

I love that you use a $2 bill in that one photo…

  4. Manda says:

This is beautiful. I just ordered your book and am so looking forward to trying this project and many of the others.

  5. Siobhan says:

Beautiful!! This just motivated me to finally order your lovely book 🙂 Do you mind sharing what length zippers this project needs? And any other notions/interfacing? I’m overseas and want to get everything lined up to make these once my copy of the book arrives!

  6. dolores says:

What is it about metal zippers that make me smile?:) Yeah to you getting your book in your shop!:)

  7. Mad says:

Gorgeous!! Where do you get your leather? (for the zips and things?).

    1. Anna Graham says:

Hi Mad, I use scrap leather from a local moccasin company. Check out etsy though, there are lots of listings for scrap leather, etc. 🙂

  8. Heather says:

Love these wallets! I agree about making smaller projects that can be started and finished in a shorter period of time. Definitely the kind of projects I prefer to make. This wallet is the next thing I hope to make for myself. Hopefully sooner than later 🙂

  9. Nina says:

Oh, these are so nice and I really need a new wallet! One question: do you find it’s OK to have a magnetic snap close to your bank cards? I’ve been told it can mess with the magnetic strip on the cards that holds the information…

    1. Anna Graham says:

Thanks Nina! I use a small and thin magnetic snap for these. There is 4 layers of fabric between the snap and where the cards are located. I haven’t run into any issues, but I can’t for sure know for all instances. Hope that helps a bit. 🙂

I have some leftover kid that I was thinking might be good for this wallet….maybe with a contrasting flap…but it is a bit far down on my to-do list, right now! I’m in the midst of sewing up a dozen divided baskets and another Caravan tote.

  11. Kristie says:

I have a store bought wallet that is so similar to this, and it is starting to die. Perfect timing. This book is moving up to the top of my wish list.

  12. Patti says:

Your wallets are especially lovely! I have your book and this pattern is on my list. Would you comment on what interfacings you’ve used here? I’ve made a few wallets in the past but they always seem to end up too flimsy. Yours seem to be very sturdy!

    1. Anna Graham says:

Thanks Patti! These use exactly the fabrics/interfacings that I recommend in the materials for that pattern. 🙂

  13. I’m working on the patchwork bench now but these are next on my list from your book! I’ve got the cover sewn, just need to finish the construction part 🙂

  14. Susi Norwood says:

I love these! My daughter came to visit earlier this week and I noticed that her wallet was quite worn. Looks like I found a new “Mommie Project”! Thanks for sharing!

  15. Yes! I love making small projects like this in the midst of the my larger, more daunting ones…it is so nice to have a finished project that is usable. I love the fabrics you chose for these wallets. I think this is the next project on my list from your book.

  16. Anne Rhodes says:

I have your book and I’m planning to make a wallet. But I’d like to add a strap to make it a cross-body wallet–one I can sling across my shoulder/body while I’m shopping. Any ideas how to do that? Thanks, Anna! Love your creations!

    1. Anna Graham says:

Thanks so much for your comment. I think that sounds awesome! I would probably sew a few loops of fabric into the back zipper seam and attach a strap using some swivel clasps. Would be lovely! 🙂

  17. kristin says:

oh I love these anna!! gotta start using etsy for zippers, too, they make such a huge difference in the finished product.

  18. Amanda Jean says:

I love these! My wallet is embarrassingly tattered. Thanks for a wonderful solution! xo

  19. Chanters says:

I am making this now! So excited. I’m new to sewing an addicted. I can’t stop thinking about fabric. I think this is normal, right?

    1. Anna Graham says:

      hehe, yes!!! 🙂

  20. sew easy says:

Hi Anna, yes I did it!!
Your pattern is excellent, and I’m so proud of my new wallet !! My daughter wants one too, so I know what I’ll be sewing over the next days 🙂
Thanks again for writing this wonderful book!!

    1. Anna Graham says:

      That’s great to hear! 🙂

  21. Wendy says:

I sewed this but got so confused at the very end. I am an advanced sewer and sometimes I am sure that complicates simple things but I couldn’t make it turn right. I ended up sewing the right sides of the wallet together and then hand turning the lining and zig zag ing it. There has to be a better way! Anyone know of a video just for that part? I love your side pocket shoulder bag. It is my favorite and I always get so many compliments on it. Thanks for the help. Love the book!

    1. Anna Graham says:

      Hi Wendy,
Thanks for your comment. You might want to pop in to the Noodlehead Sewing Patterns facebook group, there’s quite a few people around that are always helpful. I’ll see if I can put together a little video on those last steps though. Sometimes it can be a matter of trying again though, for me a second try at something is always easier/makes more sense. 🙂

  22. Rose Edgar says:

Hi Anna, I absolutely your book and am in the process of making this double zip wallet. I am a bit confused by the instructions in the beginning. I am visual seeing the pictures posted here with more contrast helps me. I am an advanced sewer so maybe that’s my problem, I read the instructions too quickly. A video would be great to help us visual sewers. Thank you for your lovely book.

    1. Anna Graham says:

Thanks Rose. I think I’ll be doing a quick video of the last steps of the project. If there’s a specific place you’re stuck on let me know and I can help, my email is on my contact page. 🙂

  23. Rose Edgar says:

Thanks Anna, I will do that.

  24. meghan kuiper says:

Love, love your book! This was my first project from it (and first project where I could actually follow the pattern instructions), and I’m in love!

  25. Tamee says:

You mention the main zip pocket fits an iPhone6. Do you know if it fits a Plus?It appears to be large enough to fit a Plus, but just want to make sure.

  26. Chrissy Shelton says:

Do we have permission to make and sell this wallet?

  27. Denise says:
