shopping with rossie

I first want to say thank you for all your very kind comments on my quilt for my bed.  It’s been really lovely to sleep under.

Yesterday I had the wonderful opportunity of going shopping at my local quilt shop with my friend Rossie.  If you’ve never stopped by her blog you should, oh and she’s the creator of the most awesome flickr quilt group: Fresh Modern Quilts.  If you’re into quilting at all, just stopping by that group makes you want to jump right in and quilt some more.

[looks like I need a little more practice taking pics with my iphone]

It’s funny how small the blogging world really is, Rossie and I both grew up in the same hometown – although she lives in Michigan now, so it’s definitely fun to know someone who is so knowledgeable about quilting.

I got to get a sneak peek at her mostly finished quilt for her cousin, which was just so beautiful and made me want to jump right back in and make another quilt.

It was pretty funny, when we were setting up a time to meet I had to warn her about my crazy kiddos and how they go bonkers at the quilt shop.  Do your kids do that while you’re trying to buy fabric?  I hope mine aren’t the only ones.

[thanks Rossie for snapping a pic of Natalie]

Anyway, Rossie, who is fabulously creative came up with the idea of a fabric bingo game, totally awesome!  I think Natalie would have loved it even more if she didn’t have her little sister to keep egging her on to run laps around the store instead.

Hope you have a great weekend!

Oh my, I have only been to that store once before and recognized it immediately! It is my favorite store in Wisconsin and I am trying to plan my next escape to get up there from Sauk City without any kids! How great that you live so close.

    Love the fabric bingo, too!

I dread the days when I need to take my daughter fabric shopping. I try to leave her with my husband whenever possible but sometimes I have to take her with me.

My daughter runs around like crazy and every 30 seconds or so she asks “Can we GO NOW?” It’s a frustrating experience.

Why is it that no one ever passes through Anchorage? 😉

That bingo idea is awesome. My girls go around the store asking if they can buy just about everything. Usually I go to the LQS when they’re at school, but now I can’t go with Cooper. He’s the one who runs around and tries to pull all of the bolts off the shelves. Or he finds the lone pins on the floor.

  5. oooh that looks like so much fun!
I try and avoid taking my boy into the quilt shop. He gets totally bored out of his mind and starts running around and doing all the “fun” stuff kids tend to do when bored :S

  6. My favorite local fabric shop, Cool Cottons in Portland, OR, blows a balloon up for each of my girls when we go there. That at least gives them something to focus on other than pulling out every bolt of fabric that catches their eye (that’s MY job!!).

I also try to get a little math in while we’re there and we talk about measurements. My 5 year old loves to sit at the cutting table (they have bar stools) and chat with the owner.

Otherwise, I bring non-sticky snacks like string cheese or grapes and get the kiddos to sit on the stair and eat. And of course, there is the one finger rule.

How fun! I so want a fabric shopping buddy! My kiddo has made it loud and clear that she does not like fabric stores. I’ve been sticking to online shopping for now 🙁

My daughter loves to go fabric shopping with me- as long as the fabric is for her of course. She runs down the ailes and will say really loud “this one’s PRETTY mom!” and pull it off the shelf. It’s fun in a crazy kind of way of course 🙂

Fun! It’s kind of a nightmare to fabric shop (or any kind of shop) with my daughter. She likes to run away and hide and throw fits.

Oh yes, Hazel goes mental at quilt shops, but it’s even worse when I’m there with a friend who also has kids. Then it gets embarrassing. It’s not that they’re really terrible on the scale of awful children in public, but quilt shops are usually very quiet and sedate so how embarrassed I get is mostly to do with how the people who work there react. Sometimes they stare down their noses at them in a very ‘children should be seen and not heard way’ in which case our visit is generally very short and not repeated! Some though, they’re lovely and don’t mind and even show the kids the neat buttons and the funny fabric. Those visits usually result in buying and return visits. But mostly it’s just way too hard to concentrate on fabrics when half your brain is wondering where she is what she’s doing.

The other problem with having Hazel with me is that she pesters me to buy her fabric, and frankly her taste is marginal! I hate feeling pressure to buy fabric I loathe.

Love the bingo idea though, must remember that the next time I have to take her.

The fabric store bingo = a great idea! My daughter is 3 so we need to get the reading thing down first. Right now I just don’t even take her if I can help it. She is a tornado. Btw, Eddie’s Fabrics in Sunnyvale, CA has a giant button bucket that kids love to sift through for days.

  14. Chris says:

The bingo idea is genius! Oh for fun to have a bloggy friend to shop with.

  15. Carolyn says:

Ha! I guarantee you that your kids are not the only ones who go bonkers at the fabric store. Last time I was there mine got the bright idea to pull all the thread out of the display case. Ughh!

  16. I saw the bongo pic on Pinterest, and I thought it looked like Natalie, but it wasn’t linked to your blog, so I assumed it wasn’t. Silly assumption (and GREAT idea). Glad you got to meet up with a friend 🙂

My little local fabric shop has a little corner for the kids to play in. The moment we walk in my toddler says, “pay? pay?” she plays and I wander and think, and never worry about her! It’s so awesome.
Jo Ann fabric? not so awesome.

  18. Jeannie says:

    Pretty ladies!! and normal kids.hah.ah.ah.a.a.
Looked like a very fun day out!

  19. Poppyprint says:

That’s a fun day! Hey, I finished my 241 bag today – totally fab pattern Anna.

My kids were big enough not to wreak any havoc at the quilt shop, but when I worked at my LQS, I did witness many a bored child and many an indecisive momma wanting more time to stroke fabric and talk quilting. We had one of those beads on curly wires play things for the kids, but they were all way more enamoured with the fabric! Bingo is a great idea – every shop should have a playing card at the ready for little people!

  20. anna- this is too funny! My girls refer to the my fabric store as “the place with the pop pops” because they have a HUGE selection of lollipops for moms just like us…those who promise a treat if you just cooperate while mom shops! 🙂 Glad you had a fun time!

  21. Lorie says:

Huh….that’s MY local quilt shop too!

  22. Yours aren’t the only ones – yarn store too. I think it’s all the color & texture stimulus (she mutters quietly hopefull under her breath – not just that my kids are total wild butts)

  23. Vicky says:

You are not alone Anna, my kids go bonkersin most shops but the save the extra special bonkers for shop where things can easily get knocked over!

  24. What an awesomely fantastic bingo game! Wanna make it an even smaller world? Rossie lives right near me and we’re in the same Modern Quilt Guild!
