birthday pillow

Remember this embroidered drawing?

Well, it turned into this for Natalie’s upcoming birthday!  (Thanks again Two Green Monkeys for the embroidery.)

I just used scraps for the log cabin-ish top and gave my first try at an invisible zipper.  Let me first say (and I know I’m not alone), that I will probably never do an envelope style back again!  The invisible zip was so easy to install, and no need for a special invisible zipper foot either.

Katie, over at Sew Katie Did, has an awesome tutorial on how to do the installation.  Her pillows are all fabulous by the way, so take a look around for sure.

I mostly like the fact that you don’t waste any fabric like you do with an envelope closure, just make the two pieces the same size and you’re set.

I did line the top with muslin again, I love that it feels more stable and usable that way.  This will definitely not be the end to my pillow making.  Now every fabric I see, I say to myself “that’ll make such a cute pillow”.  I’d better watch myself!

oh, and Natalie, if you’re reading this, get off my computer!  🙂 love, mom

love it! what a cute way to preserve childhood drawings! and invisible zippers are awesome! I used one in Sadie’s Easter dress this year, and it wasn’t hard at all, and looks so professional! 🙂

  14. Log cabins and zippers scare me…you need to help me get over my fear….wanna come over? I wish. Wouldn’t that be nice…”hey anna, I’m trying to make this, how about you drop by tonight for some girl time and a few laughs while you watch me seriously mess up a sewing project…i could use your help”.
Yours is fab and the fabric looks so great with the embroidery.

  20. That’s the next project for me! Thanks! We’ve been doing a lot with embroidered kid art lately, but I can only hang so many on the walls!

I”m the same way these days – all fabrics would make cute pillows! Thanks for sharing the link, I think I will try this for my next pillow project. I like how easy envelope backs are, but I don’t like how they always bubble out a little bit. The zipper would be great.

  22. Wow thats looks gorgeous… the embroidery looks so much nicer sewn into a cushion! Thanks!

Do you have a link to the original drawing? I mean, how did you make it into the embroidery???

  24. Anna says:

Oh my! thats exactly the way my almost 8 year old wrote when she was 3. It was so engaging to watch her draw. She’d narrate it all, so by looking at the pictures you didn’t get the whole story, so I wrote it all down for her when she gets older. I should try this with some of it,
