Rayon Scout Tee

Scout Tee sewn by Anna Graham (Pattern by Grainline Studio)

There’s nothing like dreamy rayon for making garments! For me, it provides the perfect level of comfort that I need in order to pull it from my closet over and over again. If you haven’t stumbled upon on the Scout Tee by Grainline Studio, it’s a great sew. Something quick and turn out so elegant looking. It’s a basic tee shape, but with so many possibilities. Scout Tee sewn by Anna Graham (Pattern by Grainline Studio)

I cut out the pattern pieces so long ago (probably when I first purchased the pattern), but they sat in an envelope until a few months ago. I decided to grab a few fabrics from my stash and pair them with a pattern in hopes that when I had time here and there, that I would be able to easily grab it and get sewing. It worked this time! I had been fumbling around my sewing space trying to clean things up a bit. I can’t stand having piles on the floor, but I do. This combo was paired together in one of those piles.

Even though I love rayon, I wasn’t sure I wanted to make a top out of this particular print. Instead of finding something else in my stash I went for it anyway. I figured it wouldn’t take that long and I could always consider it a muslin if I ended up not loving it. So glad I ended up being wrong, because I love it!

I used french seams on the shoulder and side seams as well as the arm holes. I think I’ve tried doing french arm holes in the past, but I think these turned out great (Jen has a great tutorial here if you’re curious). It really helps that the rayon is nice and forgiving. And of course I started sewing with an old needle, it ended up snagging the threads a bit, so after a few seams I switched to a new needle. Wish I would have checked my needle beforehand. Did you know that an easy way to check if your needle needs replacing is by dragging it across the top of your fingernail? If it’s a sharp needle, it won’t scratch your nail. If it needs replacing, it’ll leave scratches. I’m sure I picked that tip up somewhere online long ago, but it’s worked well for me.

I love my Scout Tee! And thank goodness for the awesome snow day we had yesterday, fresh snow always makes my living room nice and bright!

Pattern: Scout Tee by Grainline Studio
(I made a size 10, but I think I’ll go down to a size 8 with other types of wovens,
I also raised the neckline up about an inch and a half or so)

Hi Anna, that shirt looks so great on you!!! I love it! I have been wondering how the scout tee would look in rayon, now I know! I’ve made it in a woven and didn’t care for the boxyness. The rayon looks so great. Love it!!!

  2. Looks really great, I love the fluidity of this fabric. Great tip about the needles.

Love it! Thanks for mentioning that you raised the neckline, I was wondering if that would work ok so will do it myself now.
